About Granite City, Illinois

 
• The first European settlers made there way to the Granite City area as early as 1801.

• Granite City was founded in 1896 as a planned company town when German immigrant brothers Frederick G. and William Niedringhaus bought 3,500 acres from the Mississippi River across the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad tracks for their Granite ware kitchen supplies factory.

• Many Eastern Europeans arrived in the area in the early 1900s.

• The Granite City Park District is home to 13 parks.
