Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is what remains of a once-thriving pre-Columbian, Native American metropolis that existed 1000 years before European arrival.

This community was centrally located on the continent, and near the confluence of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers, making it a hub of Mississippian culture, society and trade.

The community created over 120 earthen mounds, 80 of which still remain. The largest, Monk's Mound, covers 14 acres.

Visit the The Cahokia Museum and Interpretive Center to learn more about the mound and the community.
